Abstract
Currently, there is no single-dose therapy that is effective in the treatment of nongonococcal urethritis. Azithromycin is a new azalide antibiotic and has activity in vitro against Chlamydia trachomatis, and its novel pharmacokinetics suggest that single dose may be effective in the treatment of non-gonococcal urethritis. The aim of this study is to find out the efficacy and safty of Azithromycin in the treatment of males with uncomplicated non-gonoccocal urethritis. 32 patients were given a single 100mg oral dose of Azithromycin and 30 patients were treated with doxycyclin 100mg bid for 7 days. Follow-ups after one and two weeks to examine for cure and adverse events were made. The result showed that 27 out of 32 patients treated with Azithromycin were cleared of urethritis and 24 out of 30 patients treated with doxycycline were cleared of urethritis. Single dose azithromycin shows a similar effectiveness as a 7-day regimen of doxycycline and the patient¡¯s compliance has also improved.
